Pro-Mix

Specialty Mixes

Not every plant thrives in the same soil. Pro-Mix specialty growing media are formulated for the unique needs of orchids, cacti, African violets, and other niche plants — giving each one the air, moisture, and structure it demands.

Every specialty mix contains MycoActive®, a natural organic growth enhancer that helps roots establish faster and withstand stress.

Additional Growing Components

Perlite

Lightweight volcanic glass that improves aeration and drainage in any potting mix. Use it to lighten heavy soils or as a standalone medium for rooting cuttings.

Vermiculite

A natural mineral that expands when heated, vermiculite holds water and nutrients exceptionally well — perfect for seed starting and moisture-loving plants.

Fortified Peat Moss

Premium sphagnum peat moss enriched with essential nutrients. An excellent base for custom blends or as a soil conditioner for garden beds.

All Powered by MycoActive®

Every Pro-Mix specialty mix includes MycoActive®, an organic growth enhancer that forms a beneficial network around plant roots — boosting nutrient uptake and resilience.

Learn About MycoActive

For gardeners who cultivate orchids, the right growing medium makes all the difference between a plant that merely survives and one that truly thrives. Standard potting soils are often too dense for these epiphytic beauties, which naturally grow with their roots exposed to air. A specialty orchid mix provides the chunky, open structure that allows air to circulate freely around delicate root systems while still retaining enough moisture to sustain the plant between waterings. The addition of MycoActive beneficial microorganisms further supports root health, helping orchids establish more quickly and better withstand the stresses of indoor growing environments. With the proper mix, even novice growers can enjoy spectacular blooms year after year.

African violets are among the most popular flowering houseplants, yet they have very specific soil requirements that many general-purpose mixes fail to meet. These compact plants need a growing medium that is light, porous, and slightly acidic, allowing their fine root systems to spread easily and access both air and moisture in balanced proportions. A dedicated African violet mix is engineered to provide these exact conditions, preventing the root rot that often occurs when standard potting soil compacts and becomes waterlogged. The inclusion of MycoActive technology further enhances nutrient uptake and root development, helping these beloved plants produce abundant, vibrant flowers in a wide range of colors and forms throughout the year.

Cacti and succulents have evolved to thrive in harsh, arid environments where water is scarce and soils are sandy and fast-draining. Recreating these conditions in a home container setting requires a specialized mix that prioritizes drainage and rapid drying over moisture retention. A quality cactus and succulent blend incorporates coarse sand, perlite, and other inorganic materials that prevent water from pooling around sensitive roots. This fast-draining structure, combined with MycoActive growth enhancers, helps these plants develop strong, resilient root systems capable of withstanding the occasional overwatering that is the most common cause of failure among succulent enthusiasts. The result is healthier plants with more vigorous growth and better coloration.

Specialty growing media extend beyond the most common houseplant categories to include mixes designed for tropical plants, carnivorous species, and other niche gardening pursuits. Each formulation is carefully balanced to replicate the specific soil conditions found in a plant's native habitat, whether that means extra acidity for acid-loving varieties or exceptionally sharp drainage for plants adapted to rocky slopes. These tailored blends eliminate the guesswork involved in trying to modify general-purpose soils, giving gardeners a reliable foundation for success with even the most demanding species. With MycoActive technology incorporated into every specialty formula, roots receive the biological support they need to access nutrients and water efficiently, helping unusual and exotic plants flourish in home environments where they might otherwise struggle.
